Investing, clearly explained · Step 2

Start With the Plan, Not the Product

Connect your retirement life, spending needs and time horizon before comparing funds or investment products.

A fund can be inexpensive and well diversified yet still be a poor fit for what you need the money to do. Start with your life, not a ticker symbol.

Begin with the job the money has to do.

Your retirement goal gives investments a purpose. A useful first plan does not need to predict every future expense. It needs enough detail to answer four questions:

  1. When might you need the money?Your time horizon affects how much uncertainty you can reasonably accept.
  2. What spending is essential?Housing, food, utilities and care may leave less room to adjust.
  3. What spending is flexible?Travel or gifts may be easier to change temporarily.
  4. What other income will arrive?CPP, OAS and pensions can reduce what the portfolio must provide.

Time changes the kind of risk that matters.

Money you will not need for many years has more time to recover from market declines. Money needed soon for essential spending has less room for surprises. That does not produce one correct investment mix, but it gives you a useful boundary for comparing choices.

A written plan also gives you something more stable than market news to return to. When prices fall, you can ask whether your life, spending or time horizon changed before changing the portfolio.

From plan to product

Let the plan narrow the choices.

Each answer gives the portfolio a clearer job. Product comparisons become useful only after that job is understood.

Make the goal visible

Use a rough forecast before choosing products.

Retired Kevin’s Quick Forecast helps you explore timing, savings and monthly retirement income. It is an educational starting point, not a recommendation.

A checkpoint

What would make this money feel successful?

Write one sentence: “This money is meant to help me…” Add a rough date, an essential monthly amount and something flexible. That short statement is more useful than a list of funds without a purpose.
